VIU students paint to raise funds for charities Extra money will help Boys and Girls Club, Silly Boat Regatta

Hassan Raza scrutinizes his latest brush strokes at the Boys and Girls Club on Fifth Street, Sunday.

Raza was one of 25 Vancouver Island University master of business administration students who donated their time and labour to help two local charities.

The Boys and Girls Club will have freshly painted digs and by working with College Pro Printers, the VIU students were able to donate $7,000 for Nanaimo's Child Development Centre, to help fund the July 15 Silly Boat Regatta.

At a time when many people would focus solely on themselves and their loved one, Shawn Wood, 28, is reaching out to help others.

Wood's fiancée Emily Niinemets, 24, was diagnosed with aggressive lymphoma cancer in early January. She has been undergoing chemotherapy treatments and has often been very low on energy — sometimes she is unable to get out of bed.

College Students to Volunteer Over 1,500 Hours During Alternative Spring Break

For two weeks in March, 100 of College Pro Painters’ college student managers and full-time staff members will participate in College Pro’s 6^th Annual Alternative Spring Break, traveling to Nashville where they will contribute over 1,500 volunteer hours and provide a value of $40,000 in services, equipment and materials. College Pro Painters’ efforts will benefit two local organizations: Cottage Cove Urban Ministries and East Nashville Cooperative Ministry.
